Enhancing the Livelihood of Young Single Mothers in Rural Communities of Ruhama, Itojo Ntungamo District is a six-month project (March–August 2025) implemented by a former Norec Participant of Advance Afrika, Kansiime Justus, supported by the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC).

The project is a Norec post exchange initiative aimed to support the livelihood improvement of young single mothers by providing them with skills, resources, and support to enhance their economic well-being and overall quality of life. The project will be implemented in five villages, mainly: Mishenyi, Mpanga, Ruhanga, Kakiizi, and Nyamuhani in Ruhaama subcounty, Ntungamo district. Kansiime Justus, former Norec participant, worked closely with district local government, community structures, private actors, and civil society partners relevant to the project to address gender-specific needs in the selected communities.

Action for Livelihood Enhancement in Northern Uganda (Alenu)

Under the Development Initiative for Northern Uganda (DINU), a Government of Uganda programme supported by the European Union (EU) and supervised by Office of the Prime Minister, Caritas Switzerland has received a grant to implement the Action for Livelihood Enhancement in Northern Uganda (ALENU). ALENU is implemented by a consortium consisting of four NGOs (Caritas Switzerland, Advance Afrika, Agency for Accelerated Regional Development,and Gulu Women Economic Development and Globalization).

Objectives and Results

ALENU is a 40-month action that focuses on improving livelihoods through increased and diversified food production, enhanced market opportunities and better maternal and child nutrition in six districts of the West Nile and Acholi sub-regions.Its overall objective is to consolidate stability in Northern Uganda,eradicate poverty and under-nutrition and strengthen the foundations for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development.Its specific objectives are

To increase food security
Improve maternal and child nutrition
Enhance household incomes through support to diversified food production and commercial agriculturea nd through improving household resilience (notably to climate change) and women empowerment.

UMUNTHU is a twelve months project implemented by Chance for Change in partnership with Advance Afrika with funding from Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC). The overall objective of this action is “To equip offenders with education and skills training that will enable them become self-reliant members of society”. The project specific objectives include; improving the entrepreneurship component of C4C programmes through the introduction of new income generating activities and training in mediation skills to handle challenging mediations with families and communities that are unforgiving towards ex-offenders.

Bridging Opportunities for Effective and Productive Livelihoods of Youth Prison Inmates and Ex-Inmates in Northern Uganda

Bridging opportunities for effective and productive livelihoods of youth prison inmates and ex-inmates in northern Uganda is a three-year action implemented by Advance Afrika in partnership with Edukans and Uganda Prison Service with support from European Union. The action inspires a contribution towards economic development in northern Uganda by promoting the economic empowerment and participation of youth prison inmates and ex-inmates in Amuru, Gulu and Kitgum districts.

The overall objective of the action is to strengthen youth engagement in social, economic and political opportunities to realize their full potential and meaningfully contribute to economic development in northern Uganda by.

Improving youth ex-inmate’s business skills and access to economic opportunities
Improving youth ex-inmate’s participation in political activities and access to justice
Proactively embracing the integration of youth ex-inmates into communities.

Protecting the Dignity of Women and Children in Ibanda and Buhweju Districts

Protecting the dignity of women and children is a three-year action implemented by Advance Afrika with support from European Union. It focuses on addressing violence against women and children (VAW/C) in Buhweju and Ibanda districts. Under the action, Advance Afrika and its partners will work closely with existing structures to address gender-specific needs and human rights issues in the selected communities.

The overall objective of the action is to promote functional systems and structures, as well as positive mind-sets that empower and protect the rights of women and children in Ibanda and Buhweju districts by:

Strengthening and constructively engaging community and local government structures to protect the rights of women and children.
Actively transforming attitudes and mindsets of community members towards the protection of the rights of women and children
Enabling women and their families to have increased access to socio-economic opportunities.

Empowering Local Communities to Prevent Violence Against Women and Children in West Nile (ELVWC)

The Empowering local communities to prevent violence against women and children in West Nile (ELVWC) project is a two year and six months action implemented by Advance Afrika and Partners in Community Transformation (PICOT) in partnership with Uganda Prisons Service with funding from the European Union. The project focuses on empowering women and children in Koboko and Arua districts to live peaceful and dignified lives as they enjoy their economic, social and cultural rights. The project objectives include; i) Female (ex) inmates have access to improved and impactful rehabilitation and reintegration services; ii) Community structures actively engage in changing attitudes, perceptions and practices regarding respect for women’s and children’s rights.The action hereby is two-fold, as it seeks to support (a) vulnerable women in and after prison as well as (b) vulnerable women in the community at large. The action identifies women as particularly vulnerable to falling victims to domestic violence and SexualGender Based Violence. Hence it seeks to engage both duty bearers (such as local government leadership structures, police and Uganda Prisons Service leadership) as well as rights holders (particularly women) in efforts to enable women to live dignified lives in full realisation of their rights.

Moringa Value Chain Development for Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in Northern Uganda Project

The Moringa Value Chain Development for Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in Northern Uganda project has been running from 2017 to2020 with funding from Caritas Switzerland in Uganda. The project was implemented by Advance Afrika in Gulu in cooperation with the Teso Enterprise Consulting and Marketing Association (TECOMA) in Soroti. The aim of this project was to empower vulnerablepeople and enhanced food security in northern Uganda by creating employment opportunities through the production and sale of Moringa, one of the most versatile plants with high nutritional value. The project was built around a social enterprise; Roots of the Nile (RoN), established by Caritas Switzerland and Advance Afrika with the aim of promoting Moringa and, in the long term, also other value chains as per their economic and nutritional potentials.

The overall objective of this intervention was socio economic empowerment and enhancement of food security among vulnerable people in northern Uganda.

Victim Offender Relationship Project

The Victim-Offenders Relationship Project (VOP) is a pilot intervention, which is being implemented by Advance Afrika in Partnership with Uganda Prisons Service with funding and support from AGEH Civil Peace Service. In-line with Advance Afrika’s work on the social economic rehabilitation and reintegration of vulnerable prison inmates in northern Uganda (SREE) project, the VORP project focuses on fostering peaceful co-existence. Hence the project seeks to encourage positive ways of dealing with conflict among ex-inmates, victims and communities in northern Uganda at large. Within this framework, Advance Afrika partners with Radio Wa as well as the Justice and Peace Department of Lira Diocese in a Radio Programme on community receptiveness of ex-prison inmates and victim-offender relationships. The overall objective of the radio programme is to raise awareness among community members on the situation of vulnerable youth in prison and increase their readiness to welcome and reintegrate ex-prison inmates. This shall be achieved by sharing stories of ex-prison inmates, providing insights into the justice system, encouraging community discussions on challenges and opportunities of reintegration as well as increasing the capacity of community members to address conflicts around the reintegration of ex-prison inmates.
